Bora 4-Level Lumber Storage Rack Wood and Garage Organization Space Saving Metal Shelf for Pipes, Boards, Plywood, and Building Materials – PBR-0420 White Gray by BORA

Figured this product would be a great way to store spare hardwood for my small shop. I think it would be, if it came with the necessary hardware. First order I received had clearly been returned and didn’t include any hardware. I chatted with Amazon customer service and let them know it was missing, they exchanged and nearly a week later I get another. This “new” set ALSO appears to have been opened and is missing the lag screws that allow you to secure the shelving to the walls. The smaller screws to attach the horizontal pieces to the vertical wall assembly were included this time at least? Cannot in my right mind blame the company that produces these, but when I called Bora to ask that they send me the lag screws that their products are missing, they indicate this happens all the time and that they’ll mail but will be another week or so. At this point, not sure if I just want to go spend more for something in a store to ensure it has everything or if I want to wait another week to possibly get all the pieces necessary. Can’t recommend this product as reading comments and speaking with Bora it appears poor packaging and lack of hardware with the product seems to be a well known issue.

Bought three sets (six total) for a mobile wood rack storage system. Two delivered so far, and both came with all hardware (even though one looked like it was a return, the box having been taped closed). Build quality seems OK, the metal tubing used is fairly thin but seems likely to hold the rated capacity provided the load is distributed evenly, both between two (or in my case, three) units, and depth-wise (front to back) on each shelf. Stated differently, I wouldn’t expect to put a 110-lb load at the outer edge of the shelf an expect it to hold. That load would need to be distributed along the full shelf depth.

Speaking of depth, the usable depth of the shelves is not 12.5″, as that’s the depth when measured off the mounting surface (wall). Actual usable depth is 11.5″ and maybe less, depending on fastener selection. The mounting holes are 1/4″ diameter, perfect for a 1/4″ lag screw. Accounting for my installation, I wanted full embedment into the 4×4 beam, so I needed 4.5″ long hex screws. Those heads stick out slightly into the shelf space, so that might reduce somewhat the usable depth, depending on what materials one is storing.

I don’t mind the branding on the shelf arms, but buyers should be aware it’ll be visible.

My biggest gripes are some poor design choices, one of which presents a serious safety concern:

1. The arms just sit on a screw head to prevent them from sliding down the vertical rail. The screw/hole on one end runs into the black rail/tube cap, which takes a bit of force to set properly, although that will hold the cap in place.

2. The top arm is entirely free/loose, and there is little clearance on the top for it (about 1/4″). That means a slight bump upwards and it will come off the rail. That was pretty annoying during installation, and would recommend not setting that arm into place until the rail is mounted. I had it pop off, fall down, and strike a softwood (CVG cedar) board, marring it. That also raises some serious safety concerns once installed. If a load is placed on the top arm, and you’re loading/unloading material from the lower shelf, a slight bump upwards of the upper shelf/arm could cause one or both to slide up and off the rail. Only 1/4″ is all it takes for the arm to lose its horizontal position, as the rear, top-most part of the arm goes up and over the top of the rail–even though the bottom part might still be around the rail. The arm will essentially lower, permitting all the material to fall forward off the shelf. All it would take is another screw at the top to ensure the arm doesn’t pop off unexpectedly, and I strongly recommend either a design revision or that users secure the top arm themselves.

Space is a premium as my shop is my garage. This wood rack was perfect for my needs. Four shelves 6 foot long. I can store good amount of lumber. Mounting was a breeze.

Update – I contacted the company and they are sending me replacement parts. They were very helpful, willing to accept responsibility. It is so refreshing to have a company stand by its product and ensure I get a good one from them.
