If you are putting in a modern home theater system with height effects channels, you are going to need a LOT of speaker wire. I went through over 300′ of this stuff putting in a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos capable system into a 20×14 finished space. And because I was trying to avoid the wholesale destruction of the room, I had to do some funky runs to get the wires where they needed to be while working around most of the existing drywall. This stuff was pretty easy to work with, you just have to be careful stripping it, lest you take off too many strands, but it is otherwise quite easy to handle.

It is also copper clad aluminum, not pure copper, so be careful on the long runs, near the length limits of what 14 AWG can handle. I just bought the 14AWG, 4 conductor version, and ran two conductors to (+) and two conductors to (-) on the longer runs where I was approaching the length limits. I figure 2 x 14AWG is probably more than enough to overcome the increased resistance of copper clad aluminum.

Now that the system is up and running, I’ve had no issues with this wire. It seems to have no trouble driving all of these surround speakers correctly, even at uncomfortably high volumes, and I have not noticed any issues with interference from inadequate shielding, or any of the other kinds of issues you can get when wires are too small or crummy for the job they are being asked to do.

So just be conservative in how far you run this stuff, or use the 2 conductors per terminal trick on the longer runs, and, at least in my experience, you should be fine. I don’t regret the decision to avoid spending 3X more to get pure copper wire.

After going through one spool of this wire and finding myself needing more, I ordered another spool. Everything about the wire (insulation, sheathing, flexibility) is of high quality and met my expectations. I chose this product largely based on price, but don’t feel I sacrificed anything in the way of quality.

I use this wire for low-voltage LED strip lights. 12 V and 24v. It works fantastic! It’s the only wire I’ll use.

I’ve been using this outside to run wires to an LED floodlight. So far, it’s been holding up for over a year or two now and can’t complain.

Now, it may not be what it was designed for, and it isn’t exactly designed for outdoor use, but it’s holding up to that task. I have is strung up about 8ft in the air and looped around nails and it’s handled the weather and sun.

500ft is more than enough for multiple applications and uses and I’ve been using pieces here and there for other projects. For its “intended” application, you can’t go wrong with it.

This is the second time I’ve used this wire to run surround sound for a living space. Just like the first time, the wire is high quality and gets the job done right. If anyone tells you that you need something “better” or more expensive, they don’t know what they’re talking about. Just buy it!

I’ve heard all the rumors about CCA being far inferior to “oxygen free copper”, so I decided to try this stuff out and see just how bad it was.

16/2 gauge, 250ft = 2.4 ohms (measured using a NIST traceable DMM with milli-Ohm precision)
-> this translates to 0.0048 ohms per foot (single conductor)

16/2 gauge Oxygen free copper = 0.004 ohms per foot (single conductor)

So CCA is definitely high resistance, but only 20% higher. What does this mean in terms of power dissipation?

    10ft run = 0.096ohm CCA, 0.08ohm OFC
    -CCA 4/6/8 Ohm speaker % loss: 2.4% / 1.6% / 1.2%
    -OFC 4/6/8 Ohm speaker % loss: 2% / 1.3% / 1.0%

    25ft run = 0.24 ohm CCA, 0.2ohm OFC
    -CCA 4/6/8 Ohm speaker % loss: 6% / 4% / 3%
    -OFC 4/6/8 Ohm speaker % loss: 5% / 3.33% / 2.5%

    50ft run = 0.48 ohm CCA, 0.4ohm OFC
    -CCA 4/6/8 Ohm speaker % loss: 12% / 8% / 6%
    -OFC 4/6/8 Ohm speaker % loss: 10% / 6.6% / 5%

So for >25ft cable runs you start getting significant losses (the lost power is dissipated as heat), but then it’s probably time to go down a gauge or add more conductors. Event at a 12%/10% loss driving 200W into a speaker, that’s 24W / 20W (CCA/OFC) worth of heat which is easy to dissipate along a 50ft run.

OFC just isn’t worth the extra fraction of a percent in power savings.

Note: I also look at high frequency characteristics of CCA using a network analyzer (sorry, not NIST traceable so I don’t fully trust it). It looks fine up ~20kHz which is beyond where I can hear. At >100kHz it’s almost the same, but that’s due to the skin effect.
