Update on the update: A few months in and I hate this phone. I got worse than what I paid for. This phone freezes up and lags constantly rendering it useless more often than not. The touchscreen is horribly inaccurate, you’ll touch one place on the screen and the reaction is for a touch button on the other side of the screen. It can’t even play music on local storage via bluetooth without cutting out while operating a separate app and like sending a text. Don’t buy this garbage!
Update: this phone needs more ram, it has a hard time multitasking especially off of wifi. Otherwise still 5 stars.
So far so good, it’s the standard Samsung galaxy experience. It was very easy to transfer data from my old S20 to the new A16. I do prefer the fingerprint scanner on the power button on the A models over the touchscreen fingerprint sensor on the S models, it’s far more accurate. I also prefer a SD card slot in the A models, which the S models did away with a long time ago. The only real benefit to an S model over an A model other than faster processor and more ram is the wireless charging, I’m going to miss that. I think a wireless charging feature should me made available for the A model phones ($50 retail extra per unit would be a reasonable trade).

I’d never bought an unlocked phone and was nervous. I checked and it is compatible with our carrier (Metro/T-Mobile). Setup and transfer from hubby’s old broken phone was seamless. The phone has great features for the price and the battery holds up well. Photos and videos are good quality too. Thrilled with the purchase.

I wasn’t expecting much for the cost. Doesn’t have screen record. Camera is alright. Runs kinda slow at times. But, Sound is great. Screen quality is great. It seems sturdy and has some of newer features like reacting to texts, updated emojis. I needed a new phone and it does the job.

What you need to know, tbis phone 1000% has eSIM no matter what google says. It has 1 nano sim port and 1 micro sd slot, the dual sim is the eSIM capability.
Despite what other reviews say, if you remove the bloatware you are forced to download. And block unecessary back ground processing apps, and close all your unecessary tabs and apps… like a normal person… this phone feels fast and snappy… now if you are switching from a premium galaxy to this budget galaxy you are obviouslh downgrading and it doesnt at all make sense to scream about the obvious.
This budget phone is premium of budget phones. Im not experiencing lag in the sligbtest bit
Color is accurate, the feel is lightweight but quality. Battery life is good. Sound quality is good. Durable cases are very cheap for tbis phone. And it is truly unlocked.
Deducted 1 star for having to spend 2 hours doing updates.

I was looking for a secondary phone that I could dedicate specifically to work (email, number, apps, etc). In the past I’ve had plenty of low budget phones that did a great job with this (particularly the Motorola G series) but I wanted to give Samsung a try since the price to specs ratio was really good.
The hardware itself is really good at this price. For $175, I got a phone with a good battery, decent camera, good screen, and a solid processor to keep most apps running well.
Unfortunately, the whole Samsung suite of tools slows the phone down to a crawl if they decide to automatically run or update in the background. I hate this future of forced updates, and while it IS possible to disable “most” updates, some will still happen automatically around the Samsung suite of tools.
Things like Samsung cloud, Smart things, Switch, Sync, and many more are constantly running for no reason, and attempting to interact with any will push you to create a silly Samsung account to manage their behavior. The One UI thing is extremely pushy with updates, with their overlay prompting me to update in the middle of typing an email or doing anything else.
I don’t know how we’ve fallen off so badly when it comes to UX design… at some point companies decided that their needs come first, and if there’s any leftover time and budget, the user experience gets some consideration.
Overall, the phone is a good piece of hardware, but the software is extremely annoying, pushy, laggy, and broken in many ways I highly recommend de-bloating the device by removing as much unnecessary crap as you possibly can, then the phone becomes much more usable.
